Friends of Forth Worth Nature Center

Friends of the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge (FWNC&R), one of the largest urban nature parks in the United States. Established in 1974, the Friends group collaborates with the City of Fort Worth to support conservation, education, and community engagement efforts within the 3,650-acre refuge .​

Conservation and Support Initiatives

The Friends organization plays a pivotal role in various conservation efforts and park enhancements:​

  • Bison Herd and Wildlife Care: Providing veterinary care and support for the park's bison herd and other wildlife ambassadors, ensuring their well-being and educational value .​

  • Capital Improvement Projects: Funding and overseeing major infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Bison Viewing Deck, upgrades at Greer Island, and the Lotus Marsh Pavilion, to enhance visitor experiences and accessibility .​

  • Research and Education: Supporting research initiatives on trail usage, invasive species management, and developing outdoor education programs tailored for schools to improve science literacy .​

  • Native Plant Conservation: Establishing a greenhouse for native plant propagation and education programs, promoting biodiversity and ecological restoration .​

  • Internship and Volunteer Programs: Offering internship opportunities to supplement staff and provide career growth for future conservationists, while engaging volunteers in various conservation activities .​

Through these initiatives, the Friends of the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge actively contribute to the conservation and enhancement of the park's natural resources, ensuring its preservation for future generations
