American Wild Horse Conservation

American Wild Horse Conservation (AWHC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving America's wild horses and burros in viable free-roaming herds on public lands. Founded in 2004 by Return to Freedom, AWHC advocates for humane, science-based management practices to protect these animals and their habitats. The organization works to reform federal policies that lead to mass roundups and confinement of wild horses, aiming to keep them wild and free.

Mission and Conservation Efforts

AWHC focuses on several key areas to achieve its mission:

  • Wild Horse & Burro Protection: The organization defends wild horses and burros by promoting humane treatment and advocating for stronger protections under federal law.

  • Policy & Legislation: AWHC works to influence legislation and policy to ensure the long-term survival and freedom of wild equines.

  • Science & Research: The organization supports and implements scientific research to develop effective, humane management solutions for wild horse populations.

Conservation Initiatives

  • Fertility Control Programs: AWHC has implemented the world's leading wild horse fertility control program in Nevada's Virginia Range, using the PZP vaccine to humanely manage population growth. This program serves as a model for other regions and demonstrates a viable alternative to helicopter roundups.

  • Land Conservancy Projects: The organization has developed land conservancy projects, such as the one in Fish Springs, Nevada, to protect wild horse habitats and ensure their long-term survival.

  • Advocacy and Public Engagement: AWHC has built a nationwide network of advocates and volunteers, organizing campaigns and events to raise awareness and mobilize support for wild horse conservation.
