Conservation Law Foundation (CLF)
The Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) is a nonprofit environmental advocacy organization dedicated to protecting the environment and public health in New England. Founded in 1966, CLF employs legal action, policy advocacy, and scientific research to address pressing environmental challenges across the region.
Mission and Focus Areas
CLF's mission is to use law, science, and the market to create solutions that preserve natural resources, build healthy communities, and sustain a vibrant economy. Their work spans five key program areas:
Climate Change: Advocating for policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote clean energy solutions.
Healthy Oceans: Protecting marine ecosystems and promoting sustainable fisheries.
Clean Air & Water: Ensuring the availability of clean air and water by holding polluters accountable and enforcing environmental regulations.
People & Justice: Fighting for environmental justice and equitable access to a healthy environment for all communities.
Healthy Communities: Supporting the development of resilient communities through sustainable practices and policies.
Recent Conservation Efforts
Offshore Wind Development: CLF has supported the designation of areas off the New England coast for offshore wind energy development, aiming to reduce reliance on fossil fuels while protecting critical marine habitats.
Coal Plant Closures: The organization played a role in the planned closure of the Merrimack Station, the last coal-burning power plant in New England, by 2028, marking a significant step toward cleaner energy in the region.
Salmon Farming Lawsuit: CLF filed a notice of intent to sue Cooke Aquaculture for alleged violations of the Clean Water Act at its salmon farming sites off the coast of Maine, citing pollution concerns affecting marine life and endangered wild salmon.
